Natural Asthma Relief -- Part 7

Allergy fact
About 80% of children and 50% of adults with asthma also have
allergies.

Irritants
* Respiratory infections, such as those caused by viral "colds,"
bronchitis, and sinusitis
* Drugs, such as aspirin, other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs), and beta blockers (used to treat blood
pressure and other heart conditions)
* Tobacco smoke
* Outdoor factors, such as smog, weather changes, and diesel fumes
* Indoor factors, such as paint, detergents, deodorants, chemicals,
and perfumes
* nighttime
* GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disorder)
* Exercise, especially under cold dry conditions
* Work-related factors, such as chemicals, dusts, gases, and metals
* Emotional factors, such as laughing, crying, yelling, and distress
* Hormonal factors, such as in premenstrual syndrome

Did you know that Asthma is the most common chronic illness affecting
children? Asthma is more common among boys than it is among girls. In
2004, 7 percent of males under age 18 were reported to have asthma,
compared with 4 percent of females. At least one-third of the

24.7 million people diagnosed with asthma are children under the age of
18. Asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization among
children under age 15. The percentage of children with asthma has
increased over the past two decades, from 3percent in 1981 to 6 percent
in 2002, where it remained through 2004.

People most commonly use an inhaler as their asthma remedy. Some
possible side effects of using an inhaler are: Headache, Cough,
irritated or runny nose, feelings of rapidly or forcefully beating hear
(heart Palpitations), muscle or bone pain, throat irritation, upper
respitory tract infections, nausea, nervousness and vomiting. Using
the inhaler as an asthma remedy does not trigger these possible side
effects in everyone, but why not try something that has zero side
effects, especially for children.

I would like to share a storey with you of how a young boy is using
doTerra essential oils as his asthma remedy. This young boy loves to
play outside and be active like most children. But his activity was
greatly restricted due to his Asthma. Medication is what he used for
his asthma remedy until his mother was introduced to doterra essential
oils. This young boy happened to be in the middle of an allergic
Asthma attack when a friend was visiting who happened to have her
essential oils with her. Instead of giving him his scheduled Asthma
Remedy of an albuterol treatment, they opted to try the Breathe oil.
Within minutes he stopped coughing and has whole-heartedly requested
the essential oils instead of his treatments ever since then.

This young boy actually went two entire months without an inhaler or
steroids. Recently his school nurse administered his inhaler without
calling the mother first and it actually brought on more symptoms
instead of relieving them. This young boy chooses oils for his asthma
remedy and is hooked on the power of essential oils. They diffuse
Breathe at night and apply it to his chest as needed. They love the
oils!

It is always recommended to progress with allergy treatment (and in
turn natural asthma relief) under the care of a licensed medical
practitioner.

ASTHMA REMEDY

What are some of the symptoms of Asthma? Not everyone with Asthma has
the same symptoms. In fact, many people who need natural asthma relief
don't even know it. Some common symptoms of Asthma include:
* Coughing
* Shortness of breath
* Chest tightness or pain
* Frequent chest colds
* Whistling or wheezing sound when you breathe

If you have some of these symptoms, you might need Asthma help...but
remember, only a healthcare provider can diagnose Asthma and give
asthma cures.

What are some common Asthma triggers?

Allergens and Irritants
* Seasonal" pollens
* Year-round dust mites, molds, pets, and insect parts
* Foods, such as fish, egg, peanuts, nuts, cow's milk, and soy
* Additives, such as sulfites
* Work-related agents, such as latex

On the next post I'll go more into Allergies and their roll in natural
asthma relief...

YOGA HELPS WITH NATURAL ASTHMA RELIEF: Yoga can help you manage the
symptoms of asthma and even reduce the frequency and severity of those
attacks without requiring you to take any additional medication. While
yoga helps the body's flexibility by stretching out muscles and soft
tissue it also helps release lactic acid that causes fatigue, stiffness
and soreness. This is a great benefit to asthmatic patients who find
their muscles, particularly the abdominal muscles, sore following an
asthma attack. Yoga will help your muscles build up resilience and you
will feel less sore following attacks.

NATURAL ASTHMA RELIEF BY LEARNING TO RELAX AND CONTROL YOUR BREATHING:
There are several relaxation techniques that will allow you to not only
gain more command of your breathing but will also leave you feeling
more relaxed and in control.

CONCLUSION: While it is possible to have natural asthma relief by
avoiding known triggers, using therapeutic grade essential oils and
certain herbal remedies, making dietary changes, incorporating yoga and
breathing techniques into your daily routine, it is imperative to work
with your healthcare provider.

Natural Asthma Relief -- Part 4

Asthma is a complex bronchial disorder with a wide variety of root
causes (allergy, respiratory infection, psychological factors, etc.)
with multiple physiological results including excess mucus, muscle
constriction, and/or swollen tissue in the bronchial area causing
breathing to be labored and difficult, along with coughing and
wheezing. Following are some of some of the options available for
natural asthma relief:

AVOIDING KNOWN TRIGGERS FOR NATURAL ASTHMA RELIEF: It is generally
believed that many asthma attacks are reactions to certain triggers so
one of the best ways to prevent an asthma attack is to avoid the
triggers that cause them. Cigarette smoking is one of the most
significant triggers and should be avoided. Certain perfumes or
products that have strong perfumed scents have been known to trigger
asthma attacks so avoiding perfume is a good way to prevent asthma
attacks. You should also try to buy unscented products whenever
possible. This includes deodorants, body washes, soaps, hand lotions
and other products of this nature. Look for mildly scented shampoos and
conditioners.

THERAPEUTIC GRADE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR NATURAL ASTHMA RELIEF: Most
experts in essential oils advise a slow and metered approach to using
essential oils. Lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, and a breathing or
respiratory blend can be very helpful. Frankincense is highly
anti-inflammatory and lime has excellent anti-mucus qualities that can
be helpful as well.

Application: With asthma, do not use cup and inhale or diffusion in
hopes of immediately easing the symptoms. Rather use topical or massage
applications to the chest and back, starting with gentle aromatic oils
like lavender, then progress to oils with more expectorant properties
like eucalyptus, lime and breathing blends. Finally use rosemary or
relaxing oils for calming.

Testimonials: Nicole - My son has asthma and he is supposed to be on
an inhaler twice a day. This year I started using the blend breathe.
We apply it on his chest, upper back and feet. I should do it once a
day, but sometimes I don't always remember. He is no longer on an
inhaler, we just use the oils. I have found that I have been using the
onguard blend quite a bit with it, just to make him really safe during
the winter season. I really didn't want him to catch any sickness,
because in the past we have been in and out of the hospital and
doctor's office so often. By using those two blends, he has been SO
HEALTHY this winter season. We haven't visited the ER or the doctor's
office once....which is HUGE for us. It is really exciting to feel like
we have more control of his health by using doTerra's oils. It is
great.

Carol - Our daughter has exercise induced asthma. We had been working
on her diet, which is a large part of asthma when we were introduced to
doTerra. We began using breathe blend and frankincense on her back and
chest, and immediately saw an improvement in her breathing. We have
learned that not only is it important to use the oils at the first sign
of an attack, but that it is important to make it a regular part of a
daily routine for her, besides just diet. Now we switch between
frankincense & breathe blend and lime & eucalyptus on her chest and
back hourly if we see symptoms. We also switch off between peppermint,
balance, frankincense, sandalwood, on guard or rosemary on her feet
nearly every night. Haily's attacks are very rare now, and we KNOW
why.

It is always recommended to progress with natural allergy relief
treatment under the care of a licensed medical practitioner.

EFFECTIVE HERBS FOR NATURAL ASTHMA RELIEF: Bromelain has been shown to
be quite effective for the management of symptoms related to asthma
particularly for its anti-inflammatory properties. Studies indicate
that this herb helps to relieve inflammation in the airway which
thereby reduces the severity of asthma symptoms. It is, however
important to remember that this particular herb is not for use by
anyone who has an allergy to pineapple. The most common side effect is
digestive upset although it does pose the above mentioned allergy risk.

Boswellia is another effective herb as it inhibits the formation of
compounds called leukotrienes that cause the airway to narrow when
released in the lungs. In studies, boswellia has been shown to help
patients breathe easier and help reduce the number and severity of
asthma attacks. Side effects may include digestive upset, nausea, acid
reflux and diarrhea.

Butterbur is currently one of the most talked about herbal natural
remedies for asthma as many of the active components of the shrub have
been shown to soothe muscle spasms and act as an anti-inflammatory
which can help control asthma symptoms. Butterbur is a member of the
ragweed family so anyone with allergies should avoid it and it may also
cause headache, dizziness, fainting, nausea, fatigue or vomiting.

When using herbs for natural asthma relief, always works under the
direction of a healthcare professional.

HEALTHY DIET FOR NATURAL ASTHMA RELIEF: Everyone can benefit from a
healthy diet and those with asthma are no exception. Certain foods
have been shown to help with the treatment of asthma and the prevention
of asthma attacks. Eating healthier may not completely eliminate asthma
attacks but will help make them less frequent and less severe. Beyond
avoiding known dietary triggers such as food allergies, nutritional
supplements in the form of necessary vitamins and minerals can go a
long way toward minimizing asthma attacks. Nutritional deficiencies
make for a weakened system that isn't able to effectively fight
unexpected environmental triggers. Asthmatics need to exercise care
even when using natural supplements. Make sure supplements are
hypo-allergenic so as not to react to those! The need for certain
vitamins and minerals may be greater among asthma sufferers than the
average person as the condition itself tends to contribute to certain
deficiencies. A good multi-vitamin is recommended to compensate for
these deficiencies and make for a healthier body, better equipped to
ward off reactions. Asthmatics also tend to have very low magnesium
levels - a mineral that helps relax bronchial tubes - so a supplemental
dose may be advisable. Finally, Vitamin C is believed to improve
bronchial functioning. Therefore, fruits and vegetables are an
especially important part of the diet of any person with asthma.
Apples, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, melons, berries, tomatoes and
leafy green vegetables are an excellent addition to your diet as these
foods have been shown to reduce the severity and frequency of asthma
attacks. Studies indicate that children who had diets that contained a
high intake of fruits and vegetables.

Now that we've talked about preventative measures, and treatment
protocols, I wanted to discuss some things you could do using a natural
asthma relief approach should you have an attack.

What to do in Case of an Attack Using Natural Asthma Relief

Above all, remain calm. This has saved me a few trips to the emergency
room. An asthma attack can come on anytime, anywhere, so be prepared.

One afternoon , my son called me from school with a severe attack, and
he was without his albuterol. I went to the school with my essential
oils and proceeded to use the asthmatic blend that we use, and also a
marvelous blend called Balance, to help him calm down. Within 5
minutes he was breathing normal and was able to return to his classes.

He now carries a small vial of both Breathe blend, and Peppermint
essential oil for maintenance, and doTerra Balance applied to the back
of his neck to help him relax while he is at school.

Preventative Treatment Using Natural Asthma Relief

Inhalation of an "air purifying" blend to reduce bacteria in the air.
The blend may be used in a diffuser, on a tissue or in a spritzer to
mist the air. doTerra's Purify or Purify blend or make a Disinfectant
Room Spray using: 3 drops Eucalyptus, 1 drop Peppermint, 2 drops White
Fir, 1 drop Melaleuca, 2 drops Bergamot, and 1 ounce of filtered water.

Like I promised today I will actually outline a specific protocol using
Essential Oils to help you with your natural asthma relief:

Natural Asthma Relief Protocol:

1. Infection Fighter: Use doTerra's essential oil blend `On Guard' in a
capsule or in a shotglass of water, and massaged into the feet at night
with a little carrier oil. For an Herbal approach drink 1 quart of Red
Raspberry Leaf Tea each day. RRL Tea will clean out and support the
mucus membranes. You may also want to use a Lobelia tincture-1 dropper
in a warm glass of water will relax the inflamed lining in the lungs.

2. Probiotic: PB Assist 3x day for 5 days, then once a day after that.

3. Vitamin D3 and plenty of sunshine: 5000 UI daily for prevention and
natural asthma relief. (also highly effective in flu and bronchial
pneumonia prevention)

4. Eliminate ALL dairy products: Milk, cheese, ice-cream, yogurt, you
name it, it's mucus forming and will sometimes even bring on an asthma
attack. Eliminating dairy has made a world of difference in having
natural asthma relief.

6. 10 minutes daily of breathing exercises and 20 minutes of sun
exposure.

7. Diffuser: Diffusing a good essential oil specifically for asthma and
lung health is beneficial. doTerra's Breathe with some Lime essential
oil added to it has brought great relief.

8. Peppermint Essential Oil: One of our favorite essential oils for
natural asthma relief which can be used in a pinch is Peppermint. Just
one drop on the roof of the mouth or a few drops in a glass of water
will open the air passages. Also, can be put in your hand and cupped
over your nose to breathe in. Be careful with peppermint to not get it
on your nose or in the eyes. A little olive oil will erase any burning
on your skin if that does happen.

9. A warm bath may be beneficial for natural asthma relief due to
stress related triggers or outdoor allergens. Fill the tub with warm
water. Once the tube is filled, add 6 drops each of bergamot,
chamomile, and lavender essential oils.

10. Deep diaphragm breathing. Sit with your legs crossed in a
comfortable position. Breathe slowly and evenly from your diaphragm,
through your nose. Fill your lower abdomen, lungs, then chest with air.
Hold for four counts, then slowly exhale the air out from your chest,
lungs, then lower abdomen. Repeat 3 or 4 times. That's it! Just allow
your shoulders to drop and your face to relax as you breathe deeply.

Natural Asthma Relief -- Part 1

Natural asthma relief is an important topic, and I would like to share
a few ideas with you over the next few weeks. My way of keeping my
family healthy has evolved and improved over the last 22 years of
parenting and holistic education. What works for my family has been the
result of trial and error, study and prayer. As an aromatherapist and
herbalist practitioner, I have learned to lean on my family's journey
in treating and healing different disorders and disease, including
natural asthma relief.

The Foundation for Natural Asthma Relief

The first step is to form and build the foundation for health,
including natural asthma relief:

1. A clean diet: No soda, fast and junk food, artificial flavors,
colors and sweeteners. Limited refined sugars and flours. Organic and
fresh as possible, plenty of fruits and veggies and real whole grains.
Eat little animal products and decrease the amount of salt used on
foods. Both will stimulate the formation of mucus in the system, which
overburdens and overheats the body.

2. Movement: Stretch and move your body daily to release acid buildup
in your muscles. Movement and an exercise of your choice prolongs and
improves the quality of your life.

3. Lifestyle: Adhere to a low stress lifestyle and a positive outlook
on life. Get enough sleep so your body can rebuild and recharge.

4. Reduce Toxic Load: Become aware and reduce the amount of toxins that
you are taking into your body. OTC medications and antibiotics create
problems in the body and will stay in the body creating problems.
Instead turn to herbs and essential oils for your medicines.

5. Yeast overgrowth: Address and balance any yeast overgrowth issues
with a good Candida protocol, a good probiotic, and diet. Eliminating
sugars and adding green drinks is a good way to increase the amount of
leafy greens in your diet and greatly improve stomach digestion and
address candida (yeast) overgrowth. DoTerra's GX Assist and PB Assist
are a yeast killing and probiotic enhancing formula that is both
effective and gentle. They need to be used faithfully until the yeast
overgrowth is gone and the good bacteria is restored to the bowel.

The foundation for natural asthma relief MUST be built to have the long
term effect that you desire. In my next post I will actually outline a
specific Protocol using Essential Oils to help you with your natural
asthma relief... stay tuned!

Insomnia Cures / Using Essential Oils

Monday, May 31st, 2010 at 9:32 pm
Comments (64)

Oils: Insomnia is difficulty falling or staying asleep. It can be
triggered by stress, medications, drug or alcohol use, anxiety, or
depression. Essential oils are a blessing to those who suffer from not
being able to sleep. The sedative and relaxing properties of so many
oils provide a wide range of choices. Lavender is very highly
recommended. Frankincense, marjoram, orange, rosemary, ylang ylang,
balancing or calming blends will also have very good relaxing or
sedative properties. One blend is made by combining 2 drops Roman
chamomile, 6 drops geranium, 3 drops lemon, and 4 drops sandalwood.

Application: A key to insomnia is finding the best personal application
technique. Putting six drops of this blend (or other oils listed above)
in your bath is very effective before bedtime. After bath, can combine
5 drops of essential oil with 2 tsp. carrier oil for a foot/body
massage. Can also apply 1-3 drops oil neat, (meaning without diluting)
and rub along shoulders, stomach, feet or put oil on palms of hands and
inhale for 1-2 minutes. You can follow this by diffusing a blend or a
single oil in the bedroom. If you don't have a diffuser, make a 5% oil
and water spritz and spray on pillows or put on cotton ball and place
next to pillow.

For children, a foot massage just prior to bedtime using a calming
blend or oil will be very relaxing and will often help throughout the
night to help them sleep deeper and awake more refreshed. It can also
be a very good bonding time between parents and children.

Back Pain Help

Saturday, May 15th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
Comments (100)

Oils: Like many pain conditions, the root cause of back pain can stem
from a multitude of conditions. Assuming the cause is from physical
stress or strain and is related to muscles or connecting tissue, then
relief from essential oils can be very effective. If the condition is
chronic, it is very important to identify the root cause of the pain
even as the immediate pain is addressed. As with other muscle pain,
both analgesic (pain relief) and anti-inflammatory oils should be used.
Increased local blood circulation will help and if muscle spasms are
involved use antispasmodic and relaxing oils.

Pain relief: lavender, peppermint, and wintergreen. A pain blend is
effective when applied topically. First blend is made by combining 5-10
drops each of lavender, eucalyptus, and ginger. Second blend is made
from combining 5-10 drops each of peppermint, rosemary and basil. Then
take blend and apply 2-3 drops on location or can use as a warm
compress if no inflammation or cold compress if inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory: eucalyptus and myrrh with a citrus oil like lemon.
Improved circulation; lemon and rosemary. Muscle spasm relief and
relaxant: lavender and marjoram.

Application: For maximum relief use topical and massage application of
the selected oils in a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or
olive oil. Use self massage for areas that can be reached. A full back
massage with long strokes along the back muscles is even more
beneficial. Compresses and baths are also helpful. Diffusion of a
relaxant (such as lavender) while resting will increase relief from
spasms and associated stress.

Use of a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or olive oil is
recommended with stronger oils like wintergreen or peppermint.

Oils for Allergies and Hay Fever

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 at 7:24 pm
Comments (278)

Oils: Millions of people suffer from allergies. An allergy is a
damaging immune response to a substance that does not bother most other
people. Hay fever, asthma, and eczema are the most common reactions
associated with allergies.

When antigens or allergens begin to invade the body's immune system,
allergy symptoms like a runny nose, itching, congestion, and sneezing
or sinus pressure begin to appear. A virus does not cause these
cold-like symptoms. They are caused by an allergic response to
substances like tree pollen, grasses, and weeds. Indoor reactions are
caused by pet dander or saliva, mold or fungus, and dust mites.
Symptoms usually start upon exposure. Oils that help include lavender,
lemon, peppermint, melaleuca, lemongrass, and a breathing blend.

Application: To help the body fight off airborne allergens, put 1-2
drops each of lavender, lemon, and peppermint in a gelatin capsule then
take internally. For those who are bolder, mix the oils in a ¼ cup of
juice or water, swish 10-20 seconds and drink. Another tip is to apply
1 drop of peppermint on the base of the neck two times a day. Tap the
thymus (located just below the notch in the neck) with pointer and
index fingers. For allergy rashes and skin sensitivity, apply 3 drops
lavender, 6 drops Roman chamomile, 2 drops myrrh, and I drop peppermint
on location. When applying topically, dilute as recommended. Can also
apply oils to sinuses and to bottoms of feet. Use a breathing blend on
chest and under nose, and a drop of peppermint on your tongue before
you go to bed to relieve any congestion.

You can place several drops of melaleuca, lemongrass, or a purifying or
guarding blend on an air intake filter
every time it is changed to fight against allergy causing molds and
fungi. Diffusing any of the oils mentioned above helps reduce reactions
to allergens, mold and fungi. This would be especially useful in
bathrooms and laundry rooms. Make a 5% water spritz of basil and
lemongrass or other oils to use on bedding each time the bed is made to
exterminate uninvited dust mites, lice, and fleas.

(Other oils for allergies include: eucalyptus and basil.)
